Heywood Councillor Peter Rush is calling for an end to motorists abusing the free car parking at Heywood Market. The Liberal Democrat Councillor for Heywood North has received a number of complaints from local residents about the problem that has led to disabled people and market users being unable to park there.

Councillor Rush said, "I have concerns that motorists are abusing the goodwill of Heywood by parking there early in the morning and commuting to work in Manchester - not returning till late. This affects the market and I am sure they are losing trade because of this selfish attitude. People who do this are letting Heywood Traders down, Heywood residents and especially the disabled. I support a simple restriction that would force an end to this abuse - maybe a maximum stay of a couple of hours would ensure that residents can shop and carry out their business. I am aware that the Council are looking into this and that we have a resolution as soon as possible to this."

Councillor Rush has also called for the marking that indicate the disabled bays to be redrawn. He said, "The present situation is that the disabled parking bays are completely worn out and this has led to misuse. I am sure the Council realises the severity of this present situation, coupled with the abuse of the current parking laws - our disabled get a raw deal and I am calling for an end to that.
