Curtain up on theatre re-vamp

October 23, 2008 12:00 AM

Deputy Leader of Rochdale Council - Irene DavidsonAudiences will see and hear the benefit of a major refurbishment when the Gracie Fields Theatre in Rochdale stages its next production.

The venue is once again coming alive with the sound of music thanks to an upgrade of its orchestra pit funded by Rochdale Council.

Health and safety concerns put the orchestra pit out of action in 2006, but now the band can play once more. The pit, which forms part of the main stage, is used regularly by musicians and as a teaching area for schools.

In addition the auditorium has also been upgraded with new seats for the disabled which give a much better view of the stage.

The new facilities are being used for the first time by Rochdale Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society for 'Hello Dolly', which runs from 28 October until Saturday 1 November. This is followed by the classic family pantomime 'Jack and the Beanstalk' in December.

Deputy Council Leader Irene Davidson said: "The Gracie Fields Theatre is a popular venue and I'm delighted we've been able to invest in the theatre's future. These improvements will enable us to keep attracting live musicians, provide facilities for teaching young people and bring great entertainment to the people of the Rochdale borough."

Officially opened by Dame Gracie Fields in 1978, the theatre, based at the top of Hudsons Walk off Sandy Lane, Greave, seats nearly 700 people.
