Iron railings were cut down in Rochdale to help the war effort have been replaced after more than 60 years. In 1940 all non-essential railings were melted down for iron and steel. All that remained of the railings were short stumps, set in the stone plinths.

Rochdale Council were successful in being awarded central government funding to improve the iron railings along the gateway into Rochdale. Halifax Road and Yorkshire Street are benefiting from the improvements and the work is underway.

Councillor Zulfigar Ali, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Housing, said: "It looks impressive already. Approximately half of Yorkshire Street has been completed so far."

The project will be finished by the summer.
