A Balanced Working Life for all
Key policy proposals include:
- Creating a commission to establish an official living wage- including the level, method of delivery and deciding eligibility.
- Increasing the allocation of free childcare, starting with the current gap between maternity pay and free entitlement at age 2 to:
- hours for babies between the ages of 1 and 2
- hours for all 2-3 year olds
- 20 hours for 3-4 year olds, increasing the current entitlement by 5 hours
- 25 hours for 4-5 year-olds.
- Introduce a 'Daddy Month' to encourage more parental leave to be taken by fathers.
Commenting, Baroness Claire Tyler said:
"Since the 2008 financial crash we have all felt our household budgets squeezed but those on low and middle incomes have felt it particularly acutely.
"The wide ranging policies contained in this policy paper which are now party policy will help improve the living standards of those low and middle income households, including creating a commission to establish a Living Wage to help meet the everyday cost of living.
"In a major expansion of the allocation of free childcare hours starting from age one and increasing progressively until the start of primary school, it will also help parents juggle their working and caring responsibilities by ensuring that childcare is affordable, flexible, available and of a high quality.
"This will bring major benefits to families and the economy alike as well as enhancing child development and improving life chances through better early years' education. Complementing this are a range of new measures to encourage more flexible working practices in the workplace to assist both employers and employees alike."
