Tories lose out on tax and by elections
Originally published by UK Liberal Democrats
Liberal Democrats made two gains in the council by elections from Tories who saw a huge fall in their vote share.
Just a day after a poll by the Evening Standard showed that people know it's Liberal Democrats who are driving tax cuts in Government, not the Conservatives, this disastrous result will set Tory alarm bells ringing even louder.
The Conservatives also did badly against Labour in seats that are closely fought between the two parties, including Amber Valley, Crewe and Nantwich and Luton South.
Thursday's by elections underlined the long running trend that where Liberal Democrats are active in their communities, they poll very well.
Our congratulations go out to Andy Boddington who won Ludlow North in Shropshire and Michael Sole elected to represent Barham Downs, Kent.
The results are:
Canterbury City - Barham Downs: Lib Dem 337, C 285, Ukip 164, Lab 78, Green 40. (May 2011 - C 538, Lib Dem 510, Green 206). Lib Dem gain from C. Swing 4.0% C to Lib Dem.
Shropshire County - Ludlow North: Lib Dem 579, C 382, Ind 223, Lab 94. (May 2013- C 505, Lib Dem 420, Ukip 126, Lab 109, Green 69, Ind 21). Lib Dem gain from C. Swing 16.1% C to Lib Dem.
