Liberal Democrats have been fighting to make Britain greener, despite Tory opposition. New figures today show that the production of renewables has soared to record levels, showing that Britain is now greener than it has been in many years.

The amount of electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind, solar and hydro has risen by 43% in the past year to account for a fifth of production. This demonstrates the growing role that green energy has to play in the power grid.

Onshore wind is currently generating enough electricity for the equivalent of over five and a half million homes. ONS figures show that onshore wind generation jumped by 62%, accounting for more than a third of the renewable electricity in the first three months of the year, compared to the same period last year.
