Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has today (Thursday 8 January) asserted that we cannot have freedom without society being free to offend.

Nick's comments follow yesterday's attack on the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, in which 12 people were killed.

Responding to comments made by a caller who claimed that the focus on the magazine's cartoon's was superficial, Nick said:

"There can be no excuse, no reason, no explanation - they have killed cartoonists who have done nothing more than draw drawings which they so happen to find offensive.

"At the end of the day, in a free society people have to be free to offend each other.

"You cannot have freedom unless people are free to offend each other. We have no right not to be offended. That fundamental principle of being free to offend peopleā€¦is exactly what was under threat by these murderous barbarians."
