In memoriam: Michael Meacher

28 Oct 2015

This week we heard the sad news that Michael Meacher, the Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton had passed away after a short illness. As well as being the constituency MP for Oldham since 1970, he also was extremely prominent in his role as Environment Minister in the last Labour government, and was one of just three MPs remaining to have served in both the Wilson and Callaghan governments of the 1970s.

He was particularly dedicated to his work in the environment department, and the tributes to his committed work are a marker of how well he carried the fight for progressive green politics.

Always a committed constituency MP, Meacher served with both heart and substance, and was well respected for his commitment to his social principles. He will be remembered fondly by all those in local politics who were lucky enough to work with him.
