Paul Rowen MP - Putting in a shift

There were plenty of surprised faces as Rochdale MP Paul Rowen rolled up his sleeves for a shift at the threatened Buersil Post Office. Paul completed the gruelling 4 hour morning shift and paid thousands of pounds out in pensions. He later joined contractors Carillion PLC - who are embarking on the 'Rochdale Gully Challenge' - a Lib Dem Council initiative to clean every gully in Rochdale within a year.

Paul said, "My shift at the Post Office was certainly eye opening. The sheer range of services they provide took me back. I rolled up my sleeves though and paid out thousands of pounds in pensions and other services. There were plenty of surprised faces and it's clear that Buersil Post Office is a hugely valued community resource and axing it makes no sense whatsoever."

Paul, who last month arranged a barefoot march featuring over 100 protesters campaigning to save the popular branch continued, "It was really hectic and a lot busier than I thought it would be. I think people were surprised to see me and it was a great opportunity to meet local people and of course catch up on the local gossip. It was important for me to do this and I am even more determined to fight to save this threatened branch."

Leanne Wild, the Manageress of Buersil Post Office said, "I was very pleased that Paul took the time out to visit us. I was impressed with just how quickly he picked it up and our customers were delighted, if not surprised by his presence. He has a job as a Postmaster in the future if we survive the Government cuts!"
