Lib Dems call for parking cheat extension
Rochdale Lib Dems are calling for ASDA's 'get tough' regime on parking cheats to be extended across the country. ASDA are currently piloting the scheme at its stores in Merseyside.
Their new 'hardline' policy sees shoppers who park in disabled spaces without displaying a blue badge, and parent and child spaces without being accompanied by children facing fines.
The Lib Dems have also written to TESCO's and other major supermarkets to ask them to consider adopting the scheme.
Paul Rowen, the Lib Dem Spokesperson on disability, said, "I am keen to see this being rolled out as it's clear that this is an ongoing problem.
"I do a surgery at our ASDA and people are telling me they would like to see selfish shoppers hit where it hurts - in the pocket!
"People have got to realise the impact that parking illegally in these spots have a hugely detrimental affect on others who need the spot.
"I have written to ASDA to congratulate them on this initiative and making a request that it is rolled out as soon as possible.
"I have also written to other major supermarkets, citing the responsible step that ASDA is taking and asking them to review their own policy."
Leader of Rochdale Council Alan Taylor said: "A visit on a busy Friday afternoon shows the problem. People with disabilities or children should take priority.
"As a former shopkeeper, I know that ample parking is vital, especially for mothers or those with disabilities.
"Supermarkets should know that here in Rochdale they have the full support of our Council to get tough on those who make others lives a misery!
"I hope that these fines can send a clear message to anyone abusing the rules - that is that we will not tolerate it!
"I spent half an hour last week talking to shoppers and they overwhelmingly backed the idea."
