Paul Rowen - MP for Rochdale has been appointed as a Shadow Transport Minister by Liberal Democrat Leader Charles Kennedy MP. Paul, who will be working with the Lib Dem Shadow Transport Spokesperson Tom Brake MP said, "I am delighted to have the opportunity to have an input into our Transport Policy - Rochdale has been let down by this Government when it comes to transport.

There is obviously the Metrolink - where I will continue the campaign to force the Government to keep its promise and fully fund the Metrolink Extension to Rochdale and Oldham. Then there is the future of Rochdale Bus Station to look at as well."

Paul has been involved in the Metrolink Campaign both as Leader of Rochdale Council and now as an MP. Paul raised the issue in Parliament during his Maiden Speech and also pressed Transport Secretary Alistair Darling MP on the issue. Paul said, "I've said this before and I'll say it again - Tony Blair came to Rochdale before the General Election and promised Metrolink. Again, I put it to him and the Labour Government that they were electioneering and only a clear commitment to fund the extension to Rochdale will make me change my mind on this one."

Paul will be bringing a wealth of transport experience to the role having been a Director at Manchester Airport for 4 years and 9 years as a Member of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. Tom Brake MP recently visited Rochdale during a trip organised by the GMPTE to see first hand the need to improve public transport in the area.
