Villages Unite to give the elderly and vulnerable a special Christmas present

Milnrow and Newhey volunteers lay on bumper party inspired by TV ad

Butterworth Hall community centre played host to over 60 special guests on Saturday 19th December. Inspired by a well-known Christmas advertising campaign, Villages Unite was set up by local resident Sue Hancox to provide a festive meal and party for older people who are going to be alone over the holiday period. "It's been overwhelming to see how many people have donated time, money, food, gifts and services to the project," said Sue. "Local businesses, individuals and community organisations have all given generously to make this event a success. I can't thank everyone enough."

Over 30 volunteers turned up on the day to make the event run smoothly, and were entertained by local singer Keeley B.

The idea for Villages Unite grew through social media where local residents were asked to nominate people who would benefit from the event. Lib Dem Candidate for Milnrow & Newhey Irene Davidson, who is also the chair at Butterworth Hall, arranged for the centre free of charge and said: "A Christmas buffet, drinks, presents, raffle prizes and even entertainment have all been donated for free for vulnerable people. It is truly great to see the generosity of local residents at this busy time of year."

It is hoped that the event will be repeated next year.
