North Middleton By-Election

North Middleton by-election!

The Liberal Democrats have selected Hopwood resident, Iain Donaldson as our candidate for North Middleton, to challenge Labour’s failures in both Rochdale Town Hall and Westminster.

Iain Donaldson told us that "The Liberal Democrats feel it is our responsibility to ensure that everyone can vote for the party of their choice. Therefore, I am running as the Liberal Democrat candidate in this by-election."

“Locally we have seen council services cut to the bone, and nationally Labour have introduced new austerity measures which include maintaining the 2 child cap on child benefits, and ending the winter fuel allowance for thousands of pensioners living on the breadline here in Rochdale. and, at the moment, only one in nine burglaries in Rochdale get a visit from the police and only one in thirty-six are solved."

“Labour are letting us down, and I urge Middleton residents to use this by-election to send Starmer a message.”

Iain Donaldson has run for election three times already this year in the Rochdale by-election in February, the local elections and the general election for Blackley and Middleton South. He spent 19 years as a councillor in Manchester, moved to Hopwood during the Covid Pandemic to take care of his elderly mother. After she passed away, he decided to stay in the area, where he has retired and has now settled in.

Labour’s winter fuel cut BETRAYAL

With energy bills set to rise by around £450 on average per household again this winter, Iain Donaldson is calling on the government to reverse its decision to cut Winter Fuel Allowance.

Our elected representatives should be working to make our lives better, and so the Labour Government’s denial of the winter fuel allowance to low income pensioners not on benefits will come as a bitter blow for thousands here in Middleton!

Iain said “So many of my family and friends have told me how worried they are about this cut. This is why I am asking people to support the g the Liberal Democrat petition online at our website at www.libdems.org.uk/winter"

“Stripping support from many of the poorest pensioners in Middleton, just when energy bills are set to rise again, is simply wrong. It could force vulnerable elderly people in our community to choose between eating and heating this winter.”

LABOUR VOTES TO KEEP THE 2 CHILD BENEFITS CAP!

Middleton’s Labour MP’s voted to keep the Tories 2 child benefit cap, despite the Borough of Rochdale having one of the highest levels of child poverty in the UK, with over 25,000 children in the borough living below the poverty line.

Iain Donaldson, Liberal Democrat candidate in the North Middleton By-election,  told Focus “The Tories introduced the 2 child benefit cap and Labour have failed to remove it. Liberal Democrats believe this cap is cruel, and should be scrapped immediately.”
Whilst Rochdale's Labour MP's voted to keep the 2 child benefits cap in place, Liberal Democrat Work & Pensions Spokesperson, Wendy Chamberlain MP, one of the 72 Liberal Democrats elected to Parliament in July, told parliament that "The Liberal Democrats will keep campaigning to scrap it, which would be the quickest and most cost-effective way to lift children out of poverty with huge long-term benefits for our society and our economy.”
